The effective achievement of the slip-form paving process is dependent wholly upon the regular delivery of concrete with a uniform level of work-ability. We expedite this process by the in-house provision and operation of our own concrete batching and mixing plants, rated at 120 cubic meters per hour. These plants incorporate efficient twin-shaft mixers, suited ideally to producing large volumes of high specification, consistent quality concrete to match the demands of the slip-form process.

The recent arrival of high-capacity passenger aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ has accelerated demand for structural improvements to existing airfield pavements. This has been particularly highlighted in this case study of our recent works at Manchester Airport, where Gill Civil Engineering Limited were involved in a four-year long programme of taxiway and apron reconstruction as part of the ‘Airports Maintenance Framework Contract’.
Our work involved the breaking up of the existing pavements, (which we 100% recycled on-site for use as sub-base and lean concrete aggregates), the removal of poor quality material at formation level and the reconstruction of the pavement comprising 200mm thickness of Wet Lean Concrete (WLC) which was covered subsequently with 585mm of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC). The work was carried out in individual blocks and, from 2006 to 2010, over 70,000 cubic metres of concrete, produced by our on-site batching plant, were laid.
Efficiency
We are able to source most of our materials in-house via our sister company ‘Gill Aggregates Limited’ which means we pass on the savings associated with favourable rates and rapid, flexible response times to our clients, whilst enabling a ‘cradle to gate’ traceability of all materials and components.
