Scope: • Breakout and Removal of 2500 m2 of Existing Taxiway Pavement • Protection of Existing Services • Delethalisation • Installation of 430m of Land Drain and Filter Blanket • Installation of Primary and Secondary AGL • Supply and lay 2500 m2 of lean mix concrete and Pavement Quality Concrete

Gill Civil Engineering Limited (GCEL) was appointed to undertake rehabilitation of Taxiway Juliet at Manchester airport by Galliford Try. Due to close proximity to the main runway (05L-23R), the work had to be carried out during short working window on night time, in the airside environment and excavated areas had to be deleathalised every night. To minimise the risk of FOD, the existing pavement was saw cut and removed using vacuum lifting devices attached to wheeled excavators. Existing sub-base was removed, new land drain and filter blanket were installed prior to placement of 150mm thick new sub-base.

The new pavement construction involves installation of 150mm thick dry/wet lean concrete overlaid by Pavement Quality concrete of varying thicknesses, supplied from GCEL’s on-site concrete batching plant.

Despite multiple shift cancellation and delays due to weather and airport operations, GCEL pleased to have successfully handover of work area back to airport operations every day and complete the project nearly one month ahead of schedule.
